West Virginia American Water Response to Flood-Related Operational Impacts Continues

West Virginia American Water made additional progress today toward restoring the water distribution system in the Elkview and Clendenin areas. Crews identified another washed out water main at Doctor’s Creek and are preparing to make repairs, which will allow service to be restored to the Doctor’s Creek and Thorofare areas. Crews have rerouted water in the Blue Creek area to bypass a problem that was hindering restoration, and temporary lines have been installed in washed out areas along Rt. 4. Although main lines are pressurized, adequate pressure does not exist to begin filling some tanks that serve customers in higher elevations.

With several more mains repaired and booster stations running, water has now reached the Kelly Hill station that flows water into Clendenin. Barring unknown problems, the company expects to have a limited amount of water restored to the valley area of Clendenin by tomorrow morning. Crews continue to evaluate the system systematically as water is restored to identify previously unseen breaks.

West Virginia American Water reminds customers in Elkview and Clendenin that the precautionary boil water advisory issued Friday morning for areas that experienced water outages as a result of the flood remains in effect until further notice. Water quality personnel will collect and test water samples throughout the area once service is fully restored to all customers to ensure that water quality meets all drinking water standards.

Potable water tankers are available at the following locations for customers to fill containers:

• Herbert Hoover High School in Elkview
• Clendenin Park & Ride at Clendenin exit off I-79
• Corner of Reamer Road and Maywood Road in Clendenin (*new location*)
• Smith’s Foodfair in Clendenin
• Corner of Lizemore Road and River Haven Road off the Queen Shoals Bridge
• Keeneys Creek Missionary Baptist Church in Winona

To assist the Clendenin Volunteer Fire Department, West Virginia American Water secured an additional 10,000 gallon tanker from Ohio to be stationed in Clendenin for fire department use. To assist statewide emergency response efforts, the company also provided a 400 KW generator for the water and wastewater plants in White Sulphur Springs and an 85 KW generator to assist a nursing home in the Clay County community of Maysel.
