West Virginia American Water Responding to Operational Impacts of Winter Storm Jonas

West Virginia American Water is responding to several water main breaks in the Kanawha Valley associated with Winter Storm Jonas. Response times are expected to take much longer than usual, as many roads in Charleston and South Charleston are completely inaccessible to water company repair crews. Interstates 64, 77 and 70 are nearly impassible due to multiple wrecks and disabled vehicles, and many side roads are completely closed. Kanawha County officials are urging all non-emergency vehicles to stay off the roads.

“Our crews are working around the clock to respond to water outages, but we anticipate much longer than usual restoration times due to many roads being completely inaccessible,” said West Virginia American Water president Jeff McIntyre. “We will continue to coordinate with emergency responders and road crews to access and repair water main breaks as quickly and safely as weather conditions will allow.”

West Virginia American Water systems around the state remain in a state of readiness to respond to power outages that could affect any of the company’s hundreds of electricity-dependent facilities, such as water treatment plants, pumping stations and pressure regulating stations.

Water outages and estimated restoration times are posted to West Virginia American Water’s website at http://www.amwater.com/wvaw/alerts/WV-AlertList.html. Emergency notifications, such as precautionary boil water advisories, will be communicated through the company’s CodeRED emergency notification system.
