New York American Water Investment Summary for 2019
Company Invested Over $55.5 Million in System Improvements for Customers
Merrick, NY (January 27, 2020) – New York American Water recently announced its end-of-year investment total and system improvements for 2019. More than $55.5 million total was invested in system upgrades and important improvement projects across its Long Island and upstate service areas throughout the year.
“Investment in our infrastructure is critical to sustaining and improving delivery of quality drinking water to our customers,” said Lynda DiMenna, president of New York American Water. “Each year, we review our investment needs and identify high priority projects based on several factors. Affordability for our customers is important and we work very hard to control our costs and operate as efficiently as possible.”
Each year, New York American Water invests millions of dollars in maintaining and upgrading its treatment and distribution infrastructure. This includes regular maintenance and upgrades to treatment plants, tanks, pump stations, water mains, fire hydrants and metering equipment.
DiMenna added, “The construction of iron removal treatment plants and water main replacement to address the cause of discolored water continues to be a key focus for New York American Water, and we brought our 16th iron removal facility online in 2019. We also initiated a study to determine how to optimize our corrosion control strategy to address discolored water caused by aging, unlined cast iron pipe.”
In 2019, system improvement highlights included:
Water Mains: New York American Water replaced a total of 51,757 feet (approximately 9.8 miles) of aging pipe with new pipe in many communities, including: Atlantic Beach, Cedarhurst, Hewlett, Island Park, Malverne, Merrick, Seaford and Valley Stream. Water main replacement projects can help address discoloration and improve water quality, pressure, fire protection and service reliability.
Water Treatment and Other Production System Improvements: The following investments were made to improve water treatment and production:
- Lynbrook: Successfully redeveloped wells at Plant 24 and Plant 15 to secure two million gallons of water per day of capacity.
- Mount Ebo: Successfully redeveloped five wells and constructed a new well, totaling 215 gallons per minute of capacity.
- Roosevelt: Completed construction of a new six million gallon per day iron removal treatment plant.
- West Branch Acres: Replaced an aging water treatment facility.
- Kingsvale: Replaced an aging water treatment facility.
- Service Area 1: Initiated a study to optimize our corrosion control strategy to address discolored water caused by aging, unlined cast iron pipe located throughout Service Area 1.
Tanks/Storage: The following investments were made to increase our storage capacity to meet peak demand:
- Wantagh: Completed construction of a one million gallon storage tank and booster station.
- Glen Head: Began construction on a new 500,000 gallon water storage tank.
- West Branch Acres: Began construction of a 20,000 gallon water storage tank.
- Kingsvale: Completed construction of a 90,000 gallon water storage tank.
System Reliability: The following investments were made to ensure system reliability and prevent disruptions in service:
- Baldwin: Constructed a new 20-inch transmission main to better connect our distribution system north and south of Sunrise Highway.
- Sea Cliff: Installed an emergency generator at the Sea Cliff Well to ensure continued service if power is lost.
- Sea Cliff: Constructed a monitoring well to detect any possible saltwater intrusion into the aquifer before our water supply is impacted.
- System-Wide: New York American Water continues to install SCADA computer systems throughout our service areas to increase monitoring and reliability of plants.
Fire Hydrants: New York American Water replaced 141 fire hydrants and installed 14 new hydrants.
Service Lines: New York American Water replaced/installed 423 service lines.
